Environmental Noise and Management - Reference Book

As a result of various researches, education and practice in environmental and building acoustics for many years, the Environmental Noise and Management Book prepared by Prof. Dr. Selma Kurra, was launched by Bahcesehir University Publications. Printed as 3 volumes with approximately 1000 pages, full color and in glossy paper, this book is dedicated meticulously both for professionals and students in order to assist in the education major. Moreover it is considered as a reference book in the certificate programs at different levels on Environmental Noise Pollution being conducted by Prof. Kurra in BUTECH.
The purpose of this book concerning various aspects of noise pollution which is an important environmental issue nowadays, is to create a resource for researchers form various relevant disciplines and for those being involved with environmental engineering practice.
3 volumes comprise of various chapters covering the worldwide scientific and technological developments from the past to date in its field, author’s investigations and application experiences, summaries of the relative international standards and the reference lists annexed to each volume.
The main topics addressed in 3 volumes are as follows:

VOLUME 1
The first volume following the introduction to basic concepts on acoustics and sound physics, contains an overview of the sound sources and sound propagation phenomena in CHAPTER 1. Characteristics of noise, spectral and temporal analyses, physical environmental factors affecting noise propagation, noise units and descriptors are explained in CHAPTER 2. Environmental noise sources, namely transportation, industry, construction and others are examined from the point of sound emissions in CHAPTER 3. CHAPTER 4 covers an extensive review about the models for predicting immision levels of various types of noise sources to be encountered in environment.

VOLUME 2
The second volume CHAPTER 5 gives basic knowledge about acoustical measurements both in the field and laboratory by referring the relative ISO standards, noise measuring and analyzing techniques to be implemented for different purposes such as occupational noise, noise barriers and sound insulation measurements as well as for immision levels of environmental noise sources. The systems used in measurements including equipment and analysis software and the methodology of measurements to be implemented for different types of noise sources are acknowledged. Greater importance is given to preparation of noise maps which is current issue in European Communities in CHAPTER 6. Evolution of mapping, applied techniques, mapping software, validity tests, evaluations of results, reporting and various application examples are explained. In addition, legislation and guidance according to EU Directive 49 are annexed. Sample noise maps prepared in Turkey are summarized.

VOLUME 3
Third volume CHAPTER 7 covers the issues on community noise effects on people. Giving knowledge about hearing and perception phenomena, the noise dose/response relationships are widely discussed and previous noise impacts studies are reviewed. Noise pollution concept, noise control criteria and immision limits for various types of noise sources and soundscape design are explained. Noise control techniques are briefly summarized.

Regulations for noise and current worldwide situation in noise policies and strategies are examined and the documents issued by EU are examined in CHAPTER 8. Regulations regarding various aspects of noise in Turkey, implementation problems, past and on-going investigations conducted in the scientific and technical fields, noise control practices are summarized. As an integral part of the environmental noise pollution, mechanical vibrations are introduced and evaluated in CHAPTER 9 from the standpoints of negative effects on environment, buildings and residents. General evaluation of environmental noise issues are discussed in CHAPTER 10.
